The National Hurricane Center (NHC) identified a tropical development off the southeastern coast of the United States on Monday, just the second day of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
The NHC said it expects the low-pressure system to form within the next two to three days and move northeastward at 10 to 15 mph, though it has a low chance of developing any subtropical or tropical characteristics.
The disturbance could form into a small depression, but it is unlikely to become a tropical storm, according to the Orlando-based FOX 35 Storm Team. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service predicts an “above-normal” hurricane season in the Atlantic region, which spans from June 1 to November 30. It came as a chilling map revealed the major US cities that will soon be underwater.
NOAA expects 13 to 19 named storms, of which 6 to 10 are forecast to become hurricanes. Three to five are expected to become major hurricanes of category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of 111 mph or higher.
This forecast exceeds the yearly average of 14 named storms, 7 of which become hurricanes and 3 of which become major hurricanes.
