Hurricane Season is Just Days Away How Communities Can Stay Ahead
The 2025 Hurricane Season is imminent, with forecasts predicting higher-than-average activity levels. Some experts suggest it could be the most significant season since data collection began for historical and future predictive analyses.
It appears the previous season has just concluded, yet numerous communities remain severely affected by extreme weather events. These include intense storms, massive wildfires, severe winter ice and snowstorms, tornadoes and devastating floods, all of which have caused significant disruption. The consequences have been catastrophic in various respects, not only causing loss of life but also resulting in many individuals losing everything they own, with recovery efforts expected to take months or even years.
While communities come together to support one another during the recovery process, there is another critical aspect of disaster recovery: the stabilization of essential infrastructure that supports community lifelines. Lifelines are necessary for the continuous operation of crucial government and business functions and are vital to human health, safety, and economic security. Stabilizing these fundamental services allows all other aspects of society to function effectively resulting in a faster recovery.
The time it takes to rebuild after a catastrophic event has increased over the years from taking days and months to several years or decades. The costs associated with rebuilding after an event have increased enormously over the years. Every year we are facing major natural disasters that cost billions of dollars annually with a sharp increase from prior years as these events grow more intense with higher frequency.
Most federally funded assistance programs are on a reimbursement basis, meaning that the subrecipient must incur the expense, collect and reconcile all the data, then submit for reimbursement which could potentially take months to be received. This is causing communities to struggle with their recovery even to the point where they cannot recover with the risk to have their obligated funds taken back by the funding source because of their lack of capital budgets, not sufficient resources to get work completed, reduced staffing and the lack of proper documentation, a must have to pass audits.
We at Alternative Recovery Consulting, LLC (ARC), with our “Blue Ocean Strategy” approach, understand these complexities and struggles by applying a revolutionary change into the recovery program. Our focus, at the wake of a major natural disaster, is to immediately help in the recovery process communities large or small.
