The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on Sunday, June 1, and weather experts have warned that the first storm of the season could develop in just a few days.
Forecasters from the National Weather Service had already predicted another above-average hurricane season this year, estimating between 13 to 19 named storms, including 10 likely to develop into hurricanes and five reaching wind speeds of 110mph.
One of those named storms could develop and hit the US as early as this week. The storm could bring severe thunderstorms as well as regular heavy showers with several inches of rain that could lead to some flooding.
Meteorologists warn of chance for tropical development
The next 10 days will see moist and dry air alternating over the Caribbean and reaching as far north as Florida waters in the Gulf and Atlantic, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.
Some of the dry episodes will come with a dust storm from the Sahara Desert that has been carried thousands of miles to the west, this could result in some colorful sunrises and sunsets under clear sky conditions.
However, the periods of moist air will be accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters are monitoring an area along the Southeast coast for potential subtropical or tropical development.
